A SEASON FOR TRAVEL

A lot of people talk about traveling during the ‘seasons’ - meaning the weather or climate. Yes, you definitely want to travel to the US Northeast during the fall season to be able to enjoy the peak color at the changing of the leaves; or travel to Alaska during the summer to be able to enjoy the terrain without freezing; or travel to Europe during the spring or fall to maximize the weather and minimize the crowds , or travel to the Caribbean during the winter months to get a break from the cold. But, I contend there is a different type of travel season. The season I am talking about is the season of your life.

In our twenties and early thirties, we may be traveling alone to discover something about ourselves, or in groups to celebrate some life milestone. With more budget and time constraints during this stage of life, travel is a bonus and is focused more on getting as much adventure packed into a small amount of time on a tight budget, but it certainly can be done! In our late thirties and forties, we are most likely traveling with our family, our own children, maybe also with our own parents or in-laws, as well as extended family members. Travel during this time of life is focused on a home away from home mindset, ensuring we have all the comforts of home with a few added amenities while being conscientious about the budget and the options available. By mid to late forties and fifties, as our children are getting older and we are busier than ever, we yearn for a getaway from the day to day doldrums of balancing family and career responsibilities, and many times travel in groups to assuage the guilt of leaving that all behind if just for a few days. Travel during this time of life is focused more on luxury and adventure than anything else, with spending on extra indulgences and exclusive experiences more easily justified by the accumulation of years of hard work and sacrifices. By our late fifties and early sixties, we may be beginning to travel along again ~a journey to catch up with what our true selves have become; or maybe traveling with a partner or small group with a common goal to begin ‘bucket list’ adventures, avidly seeking the things we have learned about in life yet not truly encountered. This season is truly about discovery, discovering new cultures, new traditions, and new expectations of what is ahead for us. Whatever your season of life, or your reason for travel, please let me help you make the most of this adventure. I have traveled in each of these seasons, knowing and appreciating how different and how necessary they all are.
